Study: Vioxx™ Causes Fewer Lower Stomach and Intestinal Problems Than Alleve

Vioxx™ (rofecoxib) causes 54 percent fewer serious lower stomach and intestinal problems than the older nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug naproxen, according to presenters at Digestive Disease Week.

"These finding have several significant implications," said Dr. Alise Reicin, pointing out that an estimated 15 to 20 million people in the United States use naproxen (Alleve) on a long-term basis for relief from pain of arthritis.

"Our study indicates that use of rofecoxib rather than naproxen can reduce serious (gastrointestinal) events by about half," Reicin said.

"Since thousands of deaths caused by GI conditions occur each year in patients taking NSAIDs, the potential for saving lives is substantial," Reicin said.
