The U.S.
Food and Drug Administration has approved a total replacement
joint for patients suffering from arthritis of the middle joint
in the finger, the proximal interphalangeal joint.
The Ascension®PIP
PyroCarbon Total Joint -- a two-part, bi-condylar, semi-constrained
prosthesis -- will expand limited treatment options presently
available, providing a durable, wear-resistant joint with interchangeable
parts.
"This
(approval) will allow us to provide another solution to hand surgeons
dealing with patients with debilitating arthritis," said
Tim Seese, President and CEO of Ascension.
Ascension's
Ascension® MCP was the first total joint finger implant of
its kind to receive FDA approval.
